Kimball High School operated for 51 years as a historically Black high school, as was required under the "separate but equal" policies in effect before the Civil Rights era. The last class graduated in 1966, when McDowell County schools were fully integrated.
Kimball graduates went on to establish a National Alumni Association of 15 chapters in cities throughout the USA, gathering annually for Reunion during Labor Day weekend since 1972, to renew the bonds of fellowship and school pride.
The Boston Chapter has awarded 47 Kimball Scholarships to local college students since 2006. KHS Boston Scholarship Fund has been a 501(c)(3) nonprofit since 2011. Scholarships are competitively awarded on the basis of academic achievement, character and financial need. The application period opens in February and closes in June. Kimball Scholars are announced annually on the third Sunday in July.
KHS Boston Scholarship Fund is the fiscal sponsor of the annual Vivace Vilnius International Music Festival and Masterclasses.
